Self-Tanning Dos and Don’ts
July 29th, 2011
There are many sunless tanning options you can choose from to get a healthy glow or tan without damaging sun exposure, such as St. Tropez bronzer. However, there are also many pitfalls to avoid when applying these products. Careful application can result in a smooth, natural-looking tan; incorrect use can result in you spending the summer hiding with your head under the pillow.
The following is a list of dos and don’ts for applying self-tanning products:
DO exfoliate. A thorough, gentle scrubbing with a product like St. Tropez Body Polisher will remove dead skin cells that could mar your coloring. Also, be sure to shave your under arms and legs before application.
DO moisturize in advance, especially in dry areas. This will help replenish your skin cells before tanning and will prevent too much self-tanner from absorbing into your skin.
DO cover your face with a bronzer specifically made for your face, such as a light St. Tropez bronzer like the Everyday Gradual Tan Face. Self-tanners made for the face tend to have a lighter texture than whole body bronzers and are designed to not clog pores.
DO be careful! Use extra moisturizer on your hands and wrists to avoid over-absorption of the self-tanner as you apply it, or use gloves or an applicator like St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse Tanning Mitt. As a precaution, a product like St. Tropez Tan Optimiser Tan Remover is great to have on hand.
DON’T rush yourself. Allow yourself plenty of time to complete the self-tanner application carefully and completely.
DON’T experiment with self-tanner right before events or occasions where you want to look your best. Practice in advance.
DON’T overdo the tan. Everyone knows what a bad fake tan looks like. To avoid this, use a gradual tanning product like St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan, or plan to apply multiple, thin layers of a product like St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse to slowly build up color.
DON’T forget to apply the self-tanner to often-overlooked spots like your ears, between your toes and your underarms.
DON’T shower, moisturize, shave or exfoliate for at least eight hours after applying the self-tanner. Along the same lines, avoid exerting yourself, as sweat can compromise your tan. Be sure to wear loose clothing that won’t rub off the self-tanner.
