Oil palm plantations play an important role in Papua (Irian Jaya). Palm oil, coconut oil and palm kernel oil are edible plant oils derived from the fruits of palm trees. This vegetable oil is used in hundreds of the everyday foods, body products and cosmetics that you buy each week. In 1982, the local government of Manokwari, Irian Jaya sent four clan leaders from Arfak to Medan, in North Sumatra, to ensure that the benefits of oil palm were brought to their communities.
